On Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., the Waterloo Hunt Club will host the 28th annual Earth Day clean up, rain or shine.

The purpose of Earth Day is to clean up trash and litter from the roadsides and two tracks throughout the Waterloo Recreation Area.  For twenty eight years members of the Waterloo Hunt Club, the Grass Lake 4-H Club, friends and area residents have filled at least a 30 cubic yard dumpster each year. In addition, over 2,265 tires have been retrieved from the roadsides. In total, that is enough trash to cover a NHL hockey rink with over a foot of trash and enough tires to stretch nearly a mile and a half.

The 2016 cleanup was a big success, we topped off a huge dumpster and collected 20 tires from 1 site alone, the DNR tire trailer was packed.   One of the crews found firearms and the Michigan State Police were notified and impounded them.  Some of the lucky volunteers found Morel Mushrooms, yet another reason to help!

Once again, we are asking for your help in identifying areas that need attention.  If you are aware of a specific road or dumping spot that needs cleanup, we would like to be contacted.  In addition, if you are interested in volunteering to assist during the cleanup, your help would be very much appreciated.  If you have a vehicle that can be used to haul trash, please bring it. If you do not have a vehicle to haul debris, we will pair you with someone who does.  Remember to wear sturdy shoes and gloves. Assignments will be handed out at the Hunt Club Kennels at 9:00 am - 5600 Katz Road, Grass Lake, MI 49240.

Please contact Sally McAlinden at 734-216-9912 (cell) or email to identify potential cleanup areas or if you have questions about volunteering on May 6.

All volunteers are invited to a free lunch that will be served at the Hunt Club clubhouse at approximately 12:00 noon.
